Free and Pro
What the free version includes, what Pro unlocks, subscriptions, trials, and restoring purchases.
BrowserFairy is free to download and use, with an optional Pro subscription. The free version is enough for a simple setup, and Pro adds more rules, profile routing, and backups. This page explains exactly what each one includes and how subscriptions, trials, and restoring work.
What the free version includes
The free version is fully functional and runs without a time limit. It includes everything you need to route links: the Rules Editor, the Browser Launcher, keyboard shortcuts, and your fallback browser.
The one limit is the number of active rules. The free version allows up to three active rules.
How the three-rule limit works
The limit is based on list order, and nothing is ever deleted.
- The first three rules in your list (top to bottom) stay active and route links normally.
- Any rule below the top three stays in your list, but it is turned off. When you select it in the Rules Editor, you'll see the banner This rule is inactive and won't route any links. with an Upgrade button.
- An inactive rule comes back to life the moment you do one of two things: subscribe to Pro, or drag it up into the top three. You reorder rules by dragging them in the Rules Editor.
So you never lose work. A fourth rule you add today is simply waiting, and it routes links again as soon as it is in the top three or you go Pro. For more on how order decides which rule wins, see How routing works.
Reordering is free
You don't need Pro to change which three rules are active. If you only need a different rule turned on for a while, just drag it into the top three and the one that drops to position four becomes inactive instead.
When you'll be asked to upgrade
The free version shows an upgrade prompt at the exact moments a Pro feature would help:
- When you try to add a fourth rule, a small popover appears on the add button reading Unlock Unlimited Rules, with a More Details button that opens the Pro pane.
- An inactive rule shows the Upgrade button in its banner.
- In Settings, the Import rules and Export rules buttons, and the Enable browser profiles toggle, are dimmed with a gold Pro badge next to them. Clicking the badge takes you to the BrowserFairy Pro pane.
What Pro unlocks
Pro unlocks three features, shown on the in-app paywall:
- Unlimited Rules ("No limit on the number of routing rules you can create"). Every rule you add stays active, in any order.
- Browser Profiles ("Route links to a specific browser profile, like Work or Personal"). Send links into a specific profile, such as your Work or Personal profile in Chrome. See Browser profiles for the one-time setup.
- Import & Export ("Back up your rules or transfer them to another Mac"). Save your rules to a backup file and load them again, including moving them to another Mac. See Import and export.
Pro also includes priority support.
Subscriptions and free trials
To subscribe, open BrowserFairy's menu bar icon, choose Settings…, and select BrowserFairy Pro in the sidebar. There are two plans:
- Monthly, which shows 1 week free trial.
- Annual, which shows 1 month free trial. Annual is marked Best Value, is selected by default, and shows a per-month price so you can compare it to Monthly.
Whichever plan is selected, the button reads Start Free Trial. Click it to begin. macOS shows Apple's own purchase sheet to confirm.
Prices and trials come from the App Store
Billing is handled by Apple through the Mac App Store. The actual prices, and whether a free trial applies to your account, come from the App Store and can vary by region and account. If you have used a trial for BrowserFairy before, Apple decides whether a new trial applies.
Managing or canceling your subscription
Once you are subscribed, the BrowserFairy Pro pane changes. Instead of the plans, it shows your status, a renewal line such as Your subscription is automatically renewed on a date (or Your subscription ends on a date if auto-renew is off), and a Manage button.
Clicking Manage opens Apple's subscription settings, the same place that handles all your App Store subscriptions. To cancel, change plans, or update payment, use those Apple subscription settings. BrowserFairy cannot change billing from inside the app.
Restoring a purchase
If you already subscribed, for example on another Mac, but BrowserFairy still shows the paywall and Pro looks locked, use Restore. It sits in the footer of the BrowserFairy Pro pane next to Terms, Privacy, and Support.
- Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple ID you used to subscribe.
- Open Settings… > BrowserFairy Pro.
- Click Restore. A short Restore purchase... message appears while it checks.
When it finds your subscription, the pane switches to the subscribed state on its own and your Pro features unlock. If it cannot find one, you'll see Unable to restore purchases. Please try again., which usually means a different Apple ID is signed in.
Pro looks locked right after launching
Just after BrowserFairy starts, there can be a brief moment before your subscription status loads, during which Pro features may still look locked. Give it a second. If Pro is still locked after that, use Restore.
